The number of deaths due to lung cancer is more than those caused by any other type of cancer, for both men and women, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention claim. According to the American Cancer Society, 234,030 new cases of lung cancer will appear in 2018 and out of these, 154,050 are expected to not make it through the disease.

However, according to the American Cancer Society, the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the death rate due to lung cancer was low from 2011 to 2016. The data for these findings was from forty-two states, about 89% of the total population of the country.

With so many people suffering from this disease, the most important thing is to ensure that these patients maintain a quality of life. Doctors from Portsmouth Regional Hospital look for various ways that can better the quality of life for lung cancer patients.

According to Dr. Yoko Fukuda who is a physician in oncology, hematology and internal medicine, treatments like immunotherapy and other targeted treatments can improve patient’s quality of life. They could spend more time with their friends and families, rather than at the hospital. They can participate more in various activities, they can go travelling or any recreational exercise.

Immunotherapy can be beneficial for this purpose. The body’s immune system itself is stimulated to act against cancer. It is made to recognize cancer cells better and destroy them effectively. On the other hand, targeted treatments use a specific drug to act against a recognized mutation in the patient. These options are way better than going for chemotherapy.

Fukuda adds that there is no need for losing hair, sit for eight hours in a hospital chair, instead treatments like immunotherapy should be sought after. She says this because she had seen her patients who were older than 94, benefiting more from new alternative treatments.

Hence, quality of life should be made a priority while looking for effective treatments and doctors should enlist various treatment options.
