Throat Cancer – Types and Treatments

Throat cancer refers to tumours that develop in the throat, voice box or tonsils. In most cases, throat cancer initiates in the flat cells that line the inside of the throat.

Types of Throat Cancer

There are 6 key types of throat cancer. Such as:
Nasopharyngeal cancer:
This begins in the nasopharynx which is a part of the throat just behind the nose.
Oropharyngeal cancer:
This begins in the oropharynx which is the part of throat right behind mouth that includes tonsils.
Hypopharyngeal cancer:
This begins in the hypopharynx which lies in the lower part of the throat, just above oesophagus and windpipe.
Glottic cancer:
This begins in the vocal cords.
Supraglottic cancer:
This begins in the upper portion of the larynx and includes cancer that affects the epiglottis, which is a piece of cartilage that blocks food from going into your windpipe.
Subglottic cancer:
This begins in the lower portion of the voice box, below vocal cords.

Symptoms of Throat Cancer

Some of the common throat cancer symptoms include:

  • A cough
  • Changes in your voice
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Ear pain
  • A lump or sore that doesn’t heal
  • A sore throat
  • Weight loss

Throat Cancer treatment and therapy options

Throat cancer treatment is based on the location and stage of your throat cancer, the type of cells involved, and overall health. Some of the throat cancer treatment includes:
Radiation therapy:
High-energy beams from sources such as X-rays and protons are used to deliver radiation to the cancer cells for them to die.
Chemotherapy is used along with radiation therapy in treating throat cancers. Chemotherapy use drugs to kill cancer cells.
Targeted drug therapy:
Targeted drugs treat throat cancer by taking benefit of specific defects in cancer cells that fuel the cells’ growth.

Can Throat Cancer be cured?

Throat cancer is curable if it is caught at the initial stage. And treatment needed initially for throat cancer is radiation therapy.
