The lymphatic system comprises lymph, lymph vessels, lymph nodes, bone marrow, spleen, and liver. The lymph is the fluid that contains lymphocytes produced by the bone marrow and spleen. Lymphoma is a cancer of lymphocytes, specifically the B-lymphocytes and T-lymphocytes. There are two types of lymphoma: Hodgkin’s lymphoma and Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a kind of lymphoma cancer where the B-lymphocytes have Reed-Sternberg cells. On the other hand, Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma occurs without the presence of Reed-Sternberg cells.

Common symptoms:

  • Fatigue
  • Weight loss
  • Swelling of the lymph nodes
  • Recurrent fever
  • Night Sweats

Diagnostic procedure:

  • Thorough physical examination
  • Know the complete personal and family history
  • Examining the lymph nodes
  • Biopsy test to confirm about the malignancy present
  • Imaging tests such as X-Ray, CT scan and MRI along with blood tests.
  • Ultrasound examination

Once the diagnosis is done and with the confirmation of the lymphoma cancer, the patient may undergo a few tests to detect the exact stage of the disease.

Some of the treatment options for the cure of Lymphoma cancer are:

Radiation therapy

In this type of treatment, powerful x-rays are used to treat the lymphoma cancer. The strong radiations are directed to kill the abnormal cancerous cells either by external or internal radiation therapy.

Chemotherapy

This therapy uses anti-cancer drugs to destroy the malignant cells in the lymph system. The therapy may be done through the mouth, intravenously or placing directly into the cerebrospinal fluid.

Vaccine therapy

Vaccine treatment aims at strengthening the body’s immunity to fight the cancerous cells. It is a new treatment technique, which is meant to restore the immune system and boost its defense against the malignancies.

Another treatment option used is the high-dose chemotherapy in combination with the stem cell transplant. This technique is used to replace the destroyed blood-forming stem cells in the patient with the donor stem cells.

There are new treatments being researched to find the cure for lymphoma cancer that will help patients suffering from this affliction globally.
