The cervix is the lowest portion of a woman’s uterus connecting it with the vagina. Cervical cancer occurs when there is abnormal growth of cells of the cervix affecting the other tissues and organs. This disease spreads very slowly. The precancerous changes in women can be seen in their 20s or 30s. However, the average age of women when cervical cancer is detected in the mid-50s. This large age gap substantiates the fact that cervical cancer takes a long time to spread. Therefore, it can be prevented if adequate steps are taken.

Symptoms of cervical cancer:

  • Vaginal discharge
  • Pelvic pain

Cervical cancer can be a traumatic experience for a patient. This is not only because of the pain or discomfort it causes but also because it deteriorates the quality of life of the woman.

But thanks to the advancements in cancer research, doctors are now able to leverage technology to treat cervical cancer effectively.

Let us take a look at the treatment methods for cancer:

Surgery can be the removal of a wedge of cervical tissue containing the cancerous cells. This is known as the cone biopsy or loop electrosurgical excision procedure. Another common surgical procedure is radial trachelectomy which is a removal of cervix leaving the uterus in place. Another surgical process is a removal of the uterus as well as the cervix.

Radiation Therapy

Killing cancerous cells using high energy X rays and radioactive particles.

This treatment can be used for any type of cancer. It entails injecting anticancer drugs into the vein or the patient can take it in some other way. This drug spreads throughout the bloodstream killing all cancer cells in the body. Chemotherapy is done with radiation as it makes radiation more effective.

Targeted Therapy

Cancer may develop its own blood vessel and continue to grow. This process is known as angiogenesis. Bevacizumab is an angiogenesis inhibitor that stops this process.

This is a process where liquid nitrogen is used to freeze the cancerous cells by producing extremely freezing temperatures. Once these cells are destroyed, healthy cells can grow.

Although not exhaustive, these are some of the methods for treating cervical cancer. As medical field researches and finds new pathways, there are sure to be newer painless treatments for cervical cancer.
