Stomach Cancer – Types and Treatments

Stomach cancer is identified by the growth of cancerous cells within the lining of the stomach. Stomach cancer is also called gastric cancer and this type of cancer is difficult to diagnose in the earlier stages.

Types of Stomach Cancer

There are 4 types of stomach cancer. Such as:
Most cancers of the stomach are adenocarcinomas. These cancers originate from the cells that form the innermost lining of the stomach.
These are cancers of the immune system tissue and are sometimes found in the wall of the stomach. The treatment depends on the type of lymphoma.
Gastrointestinal Stromal tumour:
These are the rarest type of tumours which starts very early in the wall of the stomach called interstitial cells of Cajal. These can be found anywhere in the digestive tract but most are found in the stomach.
Acarcinoid tumour:
This tumour starts in hormone-making cells of the stomach. This kind of a tumour doesn’t spread to other organs.

Symptoms of Stomach Cancer

Some of the most common symptoms of stomach cancer are:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Frequent heartburn
  • Loss of appetite
  • Constant bloating
  • Early satiety
  • Bloody stools
  • Excessive fatigue
  • Stomach pain

Stomach Cancer treatment and therapy options

The main treatments for stomach cancer are:
Surgery is done to remove cancer and part or all of the stomach. And it is a part of treatment for many different stages.
Chemotherapy uses anti-cancer drugs that are injected into a vein and sometimes given by mouth as pills. These drugs enter the bloodstream and reach all the areas of the body.
Targeted therapies:
Targeted drugs are used when standard chemo drugs don’t. They have different side effects from standard chemo drugs.
Radiation therapy:
Radiation therapy makes use of high-energy rays or particles to kill cancer cells in a specific body area.
Immunotherapy makes use of medicines that help a person’s own immune system to find and destroy cancer cells.
