Signs and Symptoms of Throat Cancer

Throat Cancer arises when cells in your throat grow uncontrollably. This disease basically affects the different sections of throat, esophagus and trachea or larynx. The signs and symptoms associated with throat cancer may vary depending on the location of the tumor. Identifying all those symptoms at early stages of the disease is difficult for everyone as these are quite similar to the issues caused by the sore throat or cold.

Some of the common signs and symptoms of throat cancer may comprise the following:

Voice changes

Throat cancer generally affects the voice first. Being a patient of throat cancer, you may sound different than normal. It can be husky, quieter or as if you have a cold. Even you can feel trouble while pronouncing some voices or smear certain words.

A lump in the neck

Throat cancer patient may also have a lump in his/her neck caused by the inflamed lymph node. Swelling in lymph nodes in the neck is one of the basic symptoms of throat cancer.

Sore throat

Discomfort in the throat which persists for a long time and doesn’t get corrected with common medications.

Weight loss

Due to the painful condition, a patient with throat cancer might not be able to eat feel difficulty in swallowing food, which leads to weight loss.

In addition to these, throat cancer may include various other signs and symptoms. Such as:

  • Jaw or ear pain
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • A chronic headache
  • Bleeding through the nose or mouth
  • Swelling in the eyes, neck or nearby areas
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Regular nosebleeds
  • Wheezing
  • Pain while opening tongue or mouth
  • White patches on the tongue which do not go away quickly
  • Hoarseness
