Chemotherapy and radiations are frequently done for treating cancer patients though it harms the healthier cells as well. In case of brain cancer similar processes were carried out previously but now an undiscovered field has been discovered. It has solved the complication that was due to destruction of healthy cells.
Nano medicine, a new branch of medical field in which BXQ-350 acts as a drug. It is produced when a human lysosomal protein called Saposin C is combined with Nanobubbles of a fat molecule known as Phospholipid dioleoyl phosphatidylserine. Fat nanoparticles face no hindrance by the blood-brain barrier, so it can help to treat glioblastoma. Xiao Yang, a genetic researcher discovered it. It has no side effects or dose-limiting toxicities.
The research was given a chance to prove itself when it was presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology held in June. 17 patients suffering from advanced solid tumors and brain tumors were observed and after 113 days, six of them appeared with stability. A little betterment was seen in a patient with appendiceal carcinoma and one of them with high-grade glioma showed signs of stability after 19 months.
Puduvalli cautioned about the side effects and alarmed that though BXQ-350 is able to treat tumors, it should be observed keenly before placing it in a bigger setting. Maybe, he could see a chance of unknown danger due to the capability of the medicine that can cross the blood-brain barrier.
Phase 2 for the drug with clinical trials was accomplished. Researchers at various universities are hiring patients with malignant brain tumors and advanced solid cancerous tumors that have been treated previously by multiple ways and have a properly grown and diagnosed tumor. These patients are then administered differently with different dose quantities. This is done up to correct identification of dosage that shrinks the tumor.
Phase 3 and 4 would be for checking efficacy and safety of the drug.
It is said by Dr.Jose Carrillo that BXQ-350 therapy is similar to immunotherapy and are complementary to each other. BXQ-350 may also replace chemotherapy and radiation. It is expected that it may be able to cure an aggressive cancer known as glioblastoma which is yet impossible to cure.
The focus must be towards clinical trials to get the best output and create hope for those who have gone in a state of despair.
