Gastrointestinal cancer –a type of cancer of the different organs of the digestive system, is one of the most common forms of cancer across the globe. The overall death rate due to gastrointestinal cancer is quite high around the world. Although several chemotherapeutic agents have been successful in the prevention & treatment of gastrointestinal cancer, still most of them are immensely expensive and complicated. As such, researchers keep looking for natural ingredients to serve as effective modes of the treatment of cancer of different types.

Out of all the natural ingredients, Ginger (Zingiber Officinale) has been known to serve as the safest and the most effective medicinal spice for treating a wide range of diseases and medical ailments including dysentery, heartburn, nausea, loss of appetite, cough, and so more. Recent medical research has found that ginger along with its active components including 6-shogaol and 6-gingerol exercise anti-cancer properties towards fighting gastrointestinal (GI) cancer.

The anti-cancer & nutritional properties of ginger & its active components lie in the presence of the signaling molecules including PI3K, COX-2, STAT3, XIAP, and so more. Relevant evidence from animal, in vitro, and epidemiological studies have revealed that ginger along with its active components might help in suppressing the overall growth of cancer of several types including colon, breast, skin, ovarian, oral, renal, and GI cancers. The anti-cancer properties of ginger along with its active constituents could be associated with the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-mutagenic properties along with other biological activities.

Several preclinical studies have revealed that ginger extracts along with its constituents are known to possess antineoplastic and chemopreventive properties in the treatment of GI cancer. As such, there is great hope in the treatment of GI cancer with the help of ginger and its constituents.
