The fight with cancer is an incredibly difficult experience that requires a lot of physical and mental fortitude to overcome. More often than not, patients develop something that is called “cancer-related fatigue”.

Unlike the general feeling of tiredness, which usually goes away with rest, cancer-related fatigue is more intense, persists for longer periods of time and can seriously affect one’s health. It can easily go unnoticed by everything that is going on, and unfortunately, affects the overall outcome.

Just the shock of hearing the diagnosis can have a tremendous psychological impact, as people naturally think about the worst case in these situations. This leads to sleepless nights worrying about their future.

The treatment itself takes a great toll on the body, with surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, regular scans and blood tests. Most of the medication also has severe side effects including loss of appetite, nausea, general weakness.

Here are a number of ways to help you counteract these adverse effects:

  1. Dehydration is a common symptom, so remember to drink plenty of liquids throughout the day. Plain water (can add a slice of lemon), tea, milk are all recommended. Try to avoid coffee.
  2. Having a daily routine is important, it keeps your body and mind occupied. Even just walking around the house for a few minutes will feel great.
  3. A healthy diet of fresh fruit and vegetables will give you the necessary fuel to carry on with the fight. Try to stay clear from overly processed foods.
  4. Take naps. There’s nothing wrong with having a bit of rest, 30 minutes to an hour each day. Keeping your energy levels high is essential.
  5. Make a long-term schedule with plenty of activities as it will help you to visualize your journey. The mental health aspect is just as crucial as your physical wellbeing. Don’t let stress, anxiety, depression wear you down.

While tiredness is expected, cancer-related fatigue can hide deeper underlying issues that might negatively impact your treatment. Follow these suggestions to have a long and cancer-free life.
