Citrus Fruits May Help Prevent or Fight Cancer

Citrus fruits are rich sources of vitamins and plant compounds that can keep up your health, most importantly, they may protect against cancer. They grow on flowering trees and shrubs, with a thick leathery peel and white webbed sections teeming with juice. They can be availed throughout the year, however, the peak season, lingers in between December and April. Sweet oranges, lemons, grapefruit, mandarins, limes etc are the chief kinds of citrus fruits.

Multiple studies have shown the associated link between citrus fruit intake and lower risk of cancer. The fruits are a good provision of plant compounds and flavonoids that perform anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant functions, helping keep away cancer. Flavonoids have anti-oxidant action and it may help in inhibiting the expression of particular genes that could lead to certain degenerative diseases, for example, cancer. Citrus fruits may also actively participate in suppressing cancer, by causing the formation of new cancers to block and inactivating various carcinogens.

A study shows that people who ingested one grapefruit or drank one glass of grapefruit juice daily exhibited a reduced risk of developing lung cancer. There are other studies that show that citrus fruits may protect against stomach, esophageal, pancreatic and breast cancers.

Moreover, citrus fruits have a lot of fiber content for keeping your gut healthy. They are good for heart health, preventing the risk of stroke or other heart diseases.  They can enhance brain function according to many studies.

However, certain precautions should be kept in mind. An excessive intake of citrus fruits could lead to cavities as their acids can erode at tooth enamel. It should be noted that citrus fruits are healthier than their extracted juice, as juices could contain a higher level of fructose that can turn your liver fatty in the long run of time.
