Pancreatic cancer is one of the most aggressive cancer types out there. Moreover, it is also one of the most difficult types of cancers for treating. However, a recent study observed that a specific compound that has been used in Chinese medicine for centuries might be promising in the treatment of pancreatic cancer.
The scientists believe that pancreatic cancer is one of the toughest cancers for treating effectively. As per the estimates, only around 6 to 8 percent of the patients with pancreatic cancer tend to survive after around 5 years from the time of the disease diagnosis.
Dr. Christos Fountzilas –a leading oncologist, says, “We understand the fact that pancreatic cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death in the USA and might continue to be the same for the next 10 years. As such, we are desperately looking for new, promising treatments.”
In the context of the same, a team of researchers has found that a compound that is derived from the bark of a Chinese tree can provide a viable solution. The compound –referred to as “FL118,” is being developed and studied at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, Buffalo in New York.
Dr. Fengzhi Li –an Associate Professor in the field of Oncology, states, “The given drug – either given alone or in a combination of some other drug with the current cancer-treating therapies, can help in eliminating the tumor completely.”
The drug that has been developed by the scientists is based on a specific substance that has been since ages used in traditional Chinese medicine. The particular compound and its effects have shown to be non-toxic and highly tolerable. Fountzilas further adds, “The compound has been observed to kill the cancer cells. As such, it serves to be an aid in our treatments in killing the cancer cells effectively, even when the cancer cells have become treatment resistant.”
The team of researcher believes that they will be starting the clinical trials of the compound in the next year.
While pancreatic cancer turns out to be one of the deadliest forms of cancer out there, any possible treatment in its light can be a life-changing experience for the pancreatic cancer patients across the world.
