Breast Cancer - Types and Treatments
Breast cancer is the condition that begins with the uncontrollable growth of breast. The root of the breast cancer can be any part of the breast; however, it usually starts in the ducts which carry milk to the nipple.
Different types of Breast Cancer
There are 4 key types of Breast Cancer. Such as:
Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIA)
DCIS is a type of non-invasive breast cancer which affects the lining of the breast milk duct. This is considered early cancer and easily treatable.
Invasive Ductal Carcinoma
Under this type of breast cancer, abnormal cancer cells start forming in the milk ducts and spread beyond the ducts and various other parts of the breast tissue. Invasive Ductal Carcinoma usually affects men.
Lobular Carcinoma in situ (LCIS)
This is the type of breast cancer that arises in the milk forming glands of the breast. LCIS do not invade the surrounding tissues.
Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC)
ILC occurs in the lobules of the breast. This type of breast cancer can spread around other organs and tissues.
Symptoms of Breast Cancer
Some of the common Breast Cancer symptoms include:
- Swelling in different parts of breast
- Bloody discharge from nipple
- Tissue thickening or breast lump
- Red, pitted skin over the whole breast
- Inverted nipple
- Flaking or peeling of skin on the breast or nipple
- Unexpected variation in the size and shape of the breast
- Swelling under the arm
- Change in the appearance of the skin around the breast

Breast Cancer treatment varies depending on the size, stage and type of tumor, patient’s age and other health issues.

There are different types of surgery used to destroy the cells growth or remove breast, including sentinel node biopsy, axillary lymph node dissection, mastectomy, lumpectomy, contralateral prophylactic mastectomy
Under radiation therapy, high powered beams of radiations are used to kill or target the cancer cells. The treatment involves external beam radiations which are passed through the tumor using a big machine on the body.
Chemotherapy is a medication treatment used to destroy the cancer cells. This particular treatment is generally given along with the other treatments such as surgery. Most of the doctors give chemotherapy to the patients before surgery. The treatment also has various unwanted side effects.
Can Breast Cancer be cured?
Just like other cancers, breast cancer at early stage is survivable and treatable. But, if it is not diagnosed for years, then the chances of patient’s death are high.
