When it comes to talking about nutrition and the overall prevention of major diseases, the term “antioxidants” cannot be avoided. Antioxidants are substances that are responsible for protecting the cells in the body from the damage caused by the free radicals. This damage could occur due to certain factors including smoking, chemicals, pollution, radiation, and a byproduct of the normal metabolism process. Some of the significant dietary antioxidants that can be included in a healthy lifestyle include vitamin A, selenium, vitamins C & E, carotenoids, along with several phytochemicals including quercetin, lycopene, and lutein.

One can come across the antioxidants in many natural sources of food items. For instance, there are large amounts of antioxidants in fruits, nuts, vegetables, whole grains, and so more. There is no surprise that junk foods including the processed fast foods usually have lower amounts of antioxidants.

Health Benefits of Antioxidants

When you consume foods items that are rich in antioxidants as a part of the healthy lifestyles, it turns out good for your overall health including lowering the risks of developing heart-related complications and even cancer. As such, you can consider increasing your intake of antioxidants in the daily diet by consuming more fresh fruits & vegetables, nuts, legumes, seeds, and others.

Important Dietary Supplements

Most of the antioxidants are available as important dietary supplements. However, research has it that this does not indicate that the given supplements are beneficial for you. Antioxidant extracts are known to show remarkable results when tested in the labs. However, when it comes to being used in the human trials, the results for disease prevention have not been highly significant.

More Does Not Imply Better

Some of the antioxidant supplements could be detrimental to your overall health. As such, taking in large doses might interact with certain medications and cause more harm than good. For instance, larger amounts of vitamin A antioxidant supplements could lead to certain birth defects when consumed by pregnant women.

If you are thinking about taking antioxidant supplements, you should consult your doctor in advance.
