A study by New Environment Working Group has revealed that in as many as 21 cereals, the chemical for killing weed –the one responsible for cancer cases due to Roundup use, was found.
A team of scientists at EWG (Environment Working Group) has found in a study that around 21 cereals contain weed-killing chemicals –the same chemicals in the Roundup products that can cause cancer of many types. Around 21 cereals, including granolas and snack bars made by brands like Nature Valley, Cheerios, and Fiber One are known to contain glyphosate.
Glyphosate is the chemical that is found in the blockbuster weed-killing item “Roundup” by Bayer-Monsanto and has been linked with a series of cancers in the United States. The team of scientists found about the chemical in some of the oatmeal cereals made by brands like Fiber One and General Mills. The chemical was found above the normal level in such cereals as considered safe by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency).
Cereals Containing Glyphosate Regarded as Unsafe
As per the reports presented by the EPA, it was observed that some of the cereals had over five times the 160 parts per billion of the glyphosate content as marked by the EPA.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classifies glyphosate as a potential carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer –an important arm of the World Health Organization, since the year 2015. Even after this report, the chemical still keeps coming up in most of the food items. The EPA, along with other consumer groups like EWG, has been making efforts to outlaw the chemical altogether. However, it is still being used in most of the crops that are grown in the United States –including soybeans and corn.
Harmful Effects of the Chemical Glyphosate
Honey Nut cereal by Cheerios is the second most renowned cereal in the United States. Still, the cereal made it to the list of chemically-contaminated cereals by the EWG. Given its cancer-causing effects, glyphosate remains the major subject of an increasing number of lawsuits against the company Bayer-Monsanto.
People all around the United States of America are recently claiming the long-term use of the product Roundup that had caused cancers, including lymphoma. Until now, the courts in California have awarded as much as $2.2 billion in 3 plaintiffs in the given lawsuits.
