It seems that the old saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” might actually have a seed of truth.
A massive investigative project was conducted by researchers from the University of Perugia into claims that a natural diet full of vegetables and fruits does actually influence the risk of developing cancer. While there was a lot of information on the subject, reports varied considerably – big differences in terms of sample sizes, intake amounts, span of time etc.
Out of all the possible candidates, they settled on apples. “Our interest was attracted by apples as they are the most consumed fruit in European countries and a rich source of phytochemicals”.
They scoured through thousands of studies and reports from medical literature (on PubMed, Web of Science and Embase) and concluded that “the current meta-analysis provides convincing evidence supporting the hypothesis of the protective ability of apples in the aetiology of cancer”.
“A significant reduction of risk was observed” with colorectal cancer and breast cancer, and a high intake of apple was “significantly associated with a reduced risk of lung cancer”. The levels of influence varied, but in some cases, it ranged up to 25%.
“Apple consumption was associated with a reduced risk of cancer in the lung, colon-rectum, oral cavity, digestive tract and breast.”
