A protein was found to be in relation with tumor suppression. The protein was associated with the BRCA gene.
BAP1 gene was identified as a gene related to cell death in the eye, kidney, bile duct, mesothelioma and other cancers but it wasn’t clear how it suppresses tumors.
Mutation in BAP1, BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes results in cancer. This is because DNA is damaged in an irreparable way and cells face genetic modifications. This is said by the National Cancer Institute. These genetic alterations cause cancer.
Ferroptosis is a well-established form of cell death which plays a very important role in suppressing tumors. Cystine is an amino acid which is helpful for tumor growth and expansion of cancerous cells. It also helps in producing a large number of molecular oxygen carriers in lipids. SLCA11 is a cystine transporter which is repressed and this aids ferroptosis. This suppression is mediated by the BAP1 gene.
Diminution of Cystine is crucial to suppress cancer!
The lowering Cystine levels reduce cancer or tumor growth and along these lipids so they do not encounter these molecular oxygen carriers.
Mutation in BAP1 gene results in different forms of cancer growths. BAP1 regulated target genes were studied by the Dr. Boyi Gan, a professor at Texas who is in the field of experimental radiation oncology. He stated that an epigenetic mechanism relates ferroptosis to tumor suppression. This mechanism was facilitated by BAP1 gene.
But still, the process BAP1 gene follows to suppress tumors wasn’t clear. Role and regulation of Ferroptosis in destroying cancer cells was still unidentified and this was the statement of Gan.
Research continued and it was discovered that BAP1 helps gene regulation by producing a key enzyme that interacts all over the cell and with other enzymes. This was only for those cells which expressed BAP1 gene.
In this way, it was proved how the BAP1 gene inhibits tumor production.
