Recent Study Finds the Truth About Alternative Medicine for Cancer Patients

According to a recent research letter published in JAMA Oncology, about a third of cancer patients are using alternative medicines and not telling their doctors about it.

These alternative and complementary therapies are used in addition to their traditional medical care. From the 3100 cancer patients that responded to the questions about their complementary therapy use through the 2012 National Health Interview Survey, over 1000 of the participants told that they have been trying one or the other forms of alternative therapies within the last 1 year. And according to the study, a third of the participants who reported to using alternative therapies said that their doctor has no idea about it.

One alarming thing about what was revealed in this research is that people are actually getting into things that can be harmful to them. A number of participants also reported to actually be halting their conventional medications to pursue alternative therapies. Another alarming fact revealed in the study was that participants are actually getting into loosely regulated herbal supplements that might be interfering with their conventional treatments. To put that into perspective, higher levels of antioxidants are known to interfere with radiation and herbal supplements can be dangerous when mixed with prescription drugs.

Alternative Therapies for Cancer Patients

Some of the alternative therapies like yoga, meditation and mindfulness are highly recommended by most oncologists. About 7% of the patients reported to using these mind-body intervention alternative therapies. These therapies can help cancer patients undergoing treatments by keeping them fit and energetic while reducing stress and inducing good sleep and improving overall mental health.

Chiropractors, Osteopaths and Massage Therapist as alternative Cancer Therapies

The research also revealed Massage therapists, chiropractors and osteopaths as the other more common alternative therapies. These alternative treatments were followed by a small number of acupuncture, homeopathy, and energy therapy enthusiasts. There is not enough evidence yet to support the effectiveness of most of these treatments.
